Description:

Ago Art Talk is a program that consists of a guided tour of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and a hands-on art-making program inspired by the explored artwork. This program is designed for people living with dementia and their caregivers. The tour and art-making program are facilitated by an experienced AGO docent and assisted by volunteers from the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.

 

The volunteers will support this program by assisting the Program Facilitator in welcoming clients, tracking attendance, engaging clients in the tour, participating in the art-making program, and assisting clients, as well as engaging in conversations to enhance the experience.

 

Tasks/Responsibilities:


  • Prepare for program 30 minutes before participants arrival and post tour, i.e. museum amenities, floor plan and etiquette.
  • Welcome program participants at designated meeting spot.
  • Take attendance.
  • Accompany participants on tour of the museum gallery (45 mins).
  • Help clients engage in art making program (45 mins)
  • Ensure group is together at all times.
  • Provide support to staff and museum tour guides as needed.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Culture and/or Art insight.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Enjoy working with others, comfortable initiating conversation and including others.
  • Patient, friendly and outgoing; comfortable in non-competitive, inclusive environment.
  • Experience working or communicating with people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential data.
  • Proven initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Access to a computer and internet connection.

Time Commitment:


  • In-person: Tuesdays May 21st, July 16th, September 17th, November 19th
  • Virtual: Tuesdays January 21st & March 18th
  • 1:30pm – 3:00pm

Orientation/Training:


  • Orientation to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
  • 3 hours online modules: Dementia 101-103 and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act training.
  • Specific training to the position will be provided by the Active Living Programs Coordinator.

Screening:

All applicants will be required to submit a volunteer application, attend an interview and provide two references to be contacted by the Volunteer Department. Applicants must also agree to a background check.

Supervision:

This role will be supervised by the staff supervisor and the Active Living Programs Coordinator.
